Flashback: Carbon Leaf/Alternate Routes 6/14/09 Bluebird Theater

I got tickets to the Carbon Leaf concert on 6/14/09 because it was our wedding anniversary and my husband was the one who turned me on to Carbon Leaf. He popped Indian Summer into the cd player on the way to the Colorado State Fair the year before and I was hooked! I had heard of one of the songs on the cd called "What About Everything", so was impressed enough with the rest of the cd to steal it from my husband.

Carbon Leaf performed at the Bluebird theater with an opening band called Alternate Routes. Wow. I loved The Alternate Routes. They were alot of fun and similar in style to Carbon Leaf. Their sound is very diverse yet enjoyable. I was amazed with what they used as "instruments". They had the usual instruments along with harmonicas and such but they also used what looked like a plastic toolbox with coins/metal stuff inside to make a percussive rattle sound. There was I assume a microphone inside also to project the sound. It was a nice effect for the song they played. Carbon Leaf members joined them for some of their songs and vice versa when Carbon Leaf came on stage. I'd definitely recommend them if you are into Americana folk style rock. They'll be playing in Denver again October 27th at the Bluebird Theater with Need to Breathe and Serena Ryder.

Carbon Leaf took to the stage after The Alternate Routes. Carbon Leaf is touring in support of their latest album Nothing Rhymes with Woman. They seem to like Colorado as not only were they there 6/14 but later on around 6/30 they played at Film on the Rocks at Red Rocks Ampitheater and back they came in September with Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers. They must have played Telluride too somewhere in there. Anyway, Carbon Leaf is another American folk rock style band with hints of Irish tones. They also use a wide variety of instruments including the penny whistle and what looked like a larger and deeper sounding penny whistle providing a haunting almost ethereal feel to the tune being played. Other instruments included bells, guitars, bass violin, shakers, mandolin, and some kind of lap guitar ( I can't think of the name of it right now.) The lead is very energetic and matter of fact. haha At one point, when the crowd was yelling out various songs for them to play, he said, "We'll play what we like and you'll like it!...or you won't. *shrug*" haha

Evidently, Colorado loves Carbon Leaf as it seemed a sold out concert and everyone was singing along with the band. There was a point where in one of the songs, the lead had the crowd singing the chorus as if in the round along with him. It was a really cool effect. (The song was "Let Your Troubles Roll By". The lead singer said the song was written somewhere between Utah and Colorado. Of course Colorado loves the song because the state is mentioned in the song and the crowd enthusiastically yells it when that part of the song is sung.) They also sang a couple songs Grand Ole Opry Style (Everyone in band playing/singing around a single microphone.) They sang Seven Brides for Seven Sinners (off their live album). Very funny ( made the sign of the cross several times).

The Alternate Routes joined them on stage for a cover of Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith. Awesome!

At one point the lead singer of Carbon Leaf hopped on the stage singing parts of the song "Safety Dance" saying afterward that he was jealous that he didn't create that song. LOL The lead is very engaging. The rest of the band members were having a great time as well. It was easy to get swept up in their fun. It was like a big party on the stage at times. Lighting and stage design were simple yet effective. No special effects necessary. Love the lead singer's facial expressions. Reminds me of a musical Jim Carrey at times.

Overall, I'd say Carbon Leaf is comparable in entertainment quality as Lyle Lovett and his Large Band. Worth every penny and a must see.

Concerts, concerts and more concerts

I've been a bit lax in my concert postings. So, over the next month, I'll be posting the concerts I've been to and what I thought of them...

Like a Storm

Like a Storm is a hard rock band originally from New Zealand who later moved to Vancouver, BC, started by 3 brothers. They've been fortunate to land a contract with Prospect Park and are back on tour with Creed and Staind starting Oct 2nd.

Here's a bio excerpt from their myspace page:

CHRIS BROOKS: Vocals / Guitar / Programming & Didgeridoo
MATT BROOKS: Vocals / Guitar / Programming
KENT BROOKS: Bass / Vocals / Programming
THOMAS KARANASOS: Drums

On their debut album THE END OF THE BEGINNING, Like A Storm stir up a torrent of infectious hard rock. The Vancouver-based quartet's first full-length is an avalanche of captivating choruses and hard-hitting grooves, as exemplified by the first radio single “Chemical Infatuation.” Electronic textures and string flourishes cascade into a wall of distortion as vocal melodies hypnotize. Brothers Chris (Vocals/ Guitar/ Programming/ Didgeridoo), Matt (Vocals/ Guitar/ Programming) and Kent Brooks (Bass/ Vocals/ Programming) conjure a dynamic rock sound that's simultaneously ethereal and edgy.

Like A Storm's journey began in 2005. After rehearsing once in their native New Zealand, Matt, Chris and Kent decided to move to North America and pursue the rock n' roll dream.

"New Zealand is such an awesome place to grow up," says Chris. "It's a really inspiring place--so beautiful and isolated. But the first time we jammed, we had this amazing chemistry, and we knew we had to take our sound to the world. We left our family and friends and set up in Canada. There are so many different experiences from that time, and the songs on the record are about them."

Upon moving to Canada, it only took one show for Like A Storm to build a buzz. Kai Marcus (Methods of Mayhem/Noise Therapy) saw the band and was instantly blown away. He struck up a friendship with the guys and introduced them to multi-platinum producer Mike Plotnikoff (Three Days Grace/My Chemical Romance/Buckcherry) in early 2006. Plotnikoff and the boys immediately began trading ideas for what would become THE END OF THE BEGINNING.

The band began officially recording with Plotnikoff in Calabasas, CA in early 2007. Virtuoso musician and former Yes keyboardist Igor Khoroshev joined the production process, bringing his progressive and classical influences to the record. After over 16 months of writing, recording and experimenting, the band emerged with THE END OF THE BEGINNING.

Matt continues, "THE END OF THE BEGINNING is really the start of the next stage. We spent two years making the record, and we really lost ourselves in the recording process. We seriously evolved as artists and as writers. For us, it's a snapshot of two years of our lives and all that we went through. Musically and lyrically, it's our story."

Like A Storm packages that story in the powerful hard rock of fist-pumping anthems like "Lie to Me" and "Just Save Me." The band strikes a balance between warm electronics and massive hard rock. Matt describes their style comprehensively. "It's a big rock sound with a lot of different textures. Every time you listen to it, you'll hear something new. It's a combination of all of our favorite sounds - from heavy rock to electronic music."

"Chemical Infatuation," hits radio in August 2009, and it's the perfect introduction to the band. Not only is it dark, but it's also undeniable. Chris explains, "The first riff comes in like a sledgehammer right into your skull. The riff sets the tone for this dark place of addiction and obsession. It captures all the elements of Like A Storm. It's a heavy and ambient journey."

The video conveys that journey in disturbing but strangely sexy fashion. Its dark narrative is memorable all around. "The video is about a guy who becomes obsessed with these girls,” says Chris. “He seduces them, kills them and then turns them into a drug that he can take. Every time he takes it, he hallucinates that he's making love to them."

On the other end of the spectrum, Like A Storm penned a heartfelt and epic eulogy for their grandmother entitled "Galaxy (Rest In Peace)." Matt goes on, "She was a huge part of our lives, and she passed away while we were making the record. Because we were in L.A., we couldn't be there for the funeral. So that song was our tribute, and we wrote it for the funeral. We had two days to write the track, and the idea came right away. It was probably the easiest song we've ever written. It meant so much to all of us. We wanted to do something special and immortalize her." They did by creating one of their most touching and vibrant songs. Chris adds, "That experience brought us even closer together."

Like A Storm has grown into an extremely tight unit with Thomas Karanasos rounding out the lineup behind the kit. Thomas adds a pummeling presence that heightens the drama inherent in Like A Storm's sound. It began with the live show, and the Like A Storm concert experience is still crucial. Chris elaborates, "The live show is a huge part of what Like A Storm is. We love being on stage and blowing people away. It's an energetic explosive rock show."

In the end, for Like A Storm, artistic integrity is paramount to their path. Matt offers, "The album’s sound is epic, surreal and ominous. That's the kind of art we want to make. I want the music to transport people away from their every day lives and into this world we've created. We feel lucky we got to make a really ambitious record for our first album."

Chris concludes, "We didn't have any rules making this record. We pushed ourselves, and it was such a creative, chaotic experience. Out of that came a lot of honesty."

Being honest is always the best way to start a revolution. Let this storm sweep you away.

The End of the Beginning's release date is Sept 29. Click on the picture below for tour dates.

Cruefest 2 : Denver

Cruefest 2 was totally worth it! I saw the Denver concert August 4th and it was amazing. I got there a little late so missed some of the opening bands from the Monster Stage. I heard Drowning Pool from outside the venue as when I got to the search area, they turned me away because I had a small backpack. RUDE. Apparently an incident had occurred so all backpacks were banned.

Once I made it into the venue I headed for the concessions to get something to eat and drink. I found a spot on the lawn and listened to the last of Drowning Pool. 37 Stitches and another song I recognized but can't remember the title now. I've heard Drowning Pool in a small venue setting and now outdoor amphitheater. They translate well wherever they are. Unlike some other bands I've heard.

Cavo's set started at 6:15p, so as I was starting to go over to their set, Theory of a Deadman came onstage. So I stayed for Theory. Theory didn't sound too great. I think Tyler's voice sounded strained. Must have been not feeling well that day. The rest of the band sounded great though. They played songs mostly from their latest album Scars and Souvenirs, saving Hate My Life and Bad Girlfriend for the end. At one point Tyler during his dialogue with the audience started to play the opening chords for Sweet Home Alabama. I thought, "Alright!" but he didn't play the rest of it. The crowd started yelling but he cut it off. His lead into Hate My Life was asking what people did when they had a bad day. The crowd shouted answers and he said that the guys always typically yelled "Have a Beer!" and the girls yell "Sex!". LOL Theory seriously needs to work on their stage presence when playing big arenas. They pretty much just stand there. Not very energetic and the rest of the band just stands there too. The last time I saw them was at an indoor smaller venue and the bass player did some hopping around which was great but the other guitarist didn't do much. At some points he had his back to the audience. Very off putting when artists do that. Not sure why they do that. They'll lean their head against a speaker and play facing the speaker. Strange. Theory needs to talk amongst themselves to the audience as well. Get Dean or Dave talking too. Dave is extremely talkative in interviews so the two of them could get the crowd going more I believe. Just a thought. I digress. Once Bad Girlfriend started playing all the girls starting dancing wildly. The guys near me were very appreciative of the two girls dancing sexily down the hill from me.

Once Theory left the stage, I went to the Monster Stage to see who was playing. Rev Theory was getting ready to come on stage. Up until the concert, I wasn't really into Rev Theory but decided to stay and hear them play. Many friends on Myspace love them in concert so thought I'd give them a chance. I was not disappointed. Rev Theory was a lot of fun. Very energetic and the lead definitely got the crowd going. People moshed a bit but it never lasted long. I just moved back every time it would start but thankfully it died off quick and I could move forward again. They played songs from their second album such as Light It Up, Hell Yeah, and Far From Over. It really was too bad that they weren't on the main stage. They would have definitely gotten the crowd pumped for Godsmack. After their set, I went and bought their second album. They earned a new fan that's for sure!

Rev Theory on Monster Stage at Cruefest 2

Dust cloud raised from mosh pit.

After, Rev Theory, I tried to get a margarita before heading back to the main arena. Unfortunately, I forgot to grab my driver's license out of my backpack so even after telling them my birthdate, I was turned away. *sigh* I headed back into the arena and Godsmack was doing a drum battle between the drummer and someone else. It was off the hook. Sounded awesome. I just love anything with drums anyway so it was a real treat. After the drum interlude, the lead singer came back on stage and starting yelling at the crowd to get up off their asses. "This is a fucking rock concert so you need to be on their feet. If you are just going to sit on your fucking ass, then you shouldn't be here! If you see anyone sitting on their fucking ass, yank them up by their neck!" LMAO. I watched people slowly get to their feet. I could understand it if they were older people sitting down but they weren't! It was young people sitting too! Godsmack played about 3 more songs and then left the stage. Godsmack was my other favorite band to discover/watch. They're very entertaining.

I started talking to a guy near me who was wearing a Nickelback t-shirt. Pretty much the only person there wearing a Nickelback shirt. I think I saw one guy wearing a Theory of a Deadman shirt and the funny part was I saw that same guy at the last TOAD concert/meet and greet. Small world. I asked the Nickelback guy if he was going to the concert on Aug 25. He said he was and we got to talking about Fiddler's Green versus Red Rocks Amphitheater. We both agreed that Red Rocks was the better venue but bands seem to be avoiding it. He thought it was due the exorbitant fees the city charges to play there. Too bad. He said he hadn't been to Fiddler's in a long time due to the noise ordinance issues. The last time he'd been there, a band was playing and all of a sudden they cut the speakers off and you couldn't hear them anymore. Crazy. After awhile when I started getting antsy for the next band, a huge wheelchair cranked out on stage with some nurses and doctors pushing it and a crazy patient riding it. Soon the curtains came up to show Motley Crue playing in a padded room. Nice effect. This is the first time I've seen the Crue live. In the 80's when they were big, I was more into the new wave stuff like Duran Duran. I did listen to some hair bands like Ratt, Quiet Riot, Van Halen, but my preferences leaned toward Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Prince, Thompson Twins, and Michael Jackson. Later it was the Cure. So it was interesting to see what they were like. I was familiar with some of their popular songs like Smoking in the Boys Room and Dr Feelgood. Their set list for the night was mainly playing through the Dr Feelgood album (since it was an anniversary for it) and then after that played some more recent tunes. I liked how they interacted with the crowd. Stepping through the vinyl record, saying when it was time to flip to the other side. Tommy Lee(?) came out and sat with the crowd sharing a drink and giving a virtual hug. The set design was interesting with scantily clad girls dancing at different levels. I had read about people's concerns with the sex based show design and film. Saw the posted signs warning of adult content. But seriously it wasn't that bad. First off, people bringing their kids to a rock concert should know that it isn't going to be virtuous. Give me a freaking break. Don't bring them if you are going to take issue with what goes on. If you can't find a babysitter than stay home. Otherwise shut the hell up. At the encore I had to leave. I needed to hand out cards and stickers for Roadrunner records. I was a bit nervous about it as I hadn't seen much fan presentation of the bands I was supporting but once I started yelling about free shit, people crowded around wanting what I was handing out. All in all a successful night. Look forward to doing it again. If there is a Cruefest 2 concert coming to your town, get tickets!

Check out the new single from the Transformers 2 soundtrack. (The widget takes about a minute to load.) I don't know about you but I'm pretty darn excited for this movie to come out. The first was awesome. Linkin Park is also working with Hans Zimmer on the score. Should kick ass!

Workout Playlist

In case you're wondering, the attached playlist was meant to be for the Tunelab Forum. They have a thread going about posting a tunelab 20 songs playlist. My playlist is actually a watered down version of my workout playlist I use at the gym. Some songs aren't on the list because Imeem doesn't have them. Course the annoying thing is some of the songs on the playlist are shortened thanks to Imeem. You can only hear the full version if you login to Imeem. Nice.

Off to South Dakota! Road trip...with a 3 year old...I'm guessing my bachelor brother won't push me to bring the tot again next time...we'll see!

Freestate

Freestate is an unsigned rock band from Melbourne, Australia. Their music is passionate and hard rocking. I "discovered" their music while listening to Lastfm. Their song Necessary starts out with enticing sounds of the Middle East with background vocals soaring over the melee. The melee all comes together into a driving passionate tune that leaves you wanting more.

The band funded their first album independent of any label. The album is titled Surrender and is available for sale via Itunes. It is hard to believe they haven't been "discovered" yet. The band has since entered the Free the Noise Search for the World's Greatest Rock n Roll Band competition sponsored by Island Records and John Varvatos. Unsigned bands compete for a chance at performing live in NYC and a development deal with Island Records. Bands must submit a music video of themselves performing and get as many people as possible to rate the video. The song title Necessary above is the link to their page within the competition. Below the video are 5 stars. Click on the stars to give a rating of their video and help them reach the finals in the competition.

Depeche Mode on Tour again!

Wow. Will wonders never cease. All the old eighties bands are coming back. I see they will be playing Red Rocks Aug 27th. That should be an awesome show.

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Check it out!

I created my own Nickelback, Seether, Saving Abel playlist in honor of the Dark Horse Tour that started yesterday. Word on the street is the first concert last night was kick ass.

All I can say is they better come to Denver. But, if they do, it will be minus Seether. According to a Rockline interview, Seether will be back in the studio after the last April Dark Horse concert. So it will be interesting who takes their place. Pure speculation here, but I heard at the TOAD concert here in Denver, that Hinder was interested as well as Daughtry. Daughtry, however, wants $100,000 per show! Whoa. Can I demand $100k per work day? Somehow I don't think the University would go for it. I haven't seen anything stating whether Saving Abel will continue either.

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

Hmmmm...

Well, it has been awhile. Now that I'm done promoting Theory of a Deadman for a bit (came to Denver 2/8/2009), I can catch up.

Theory of a Deadman announced they would be doing in store signings at select Best Buys across the country while on the Saints of Los Angeles Tour. Denver being the first one, I went. I met some interesting fans and had fun with it. I'll post my experience later.

The concert that night was fantastic. Often times I go to concerts and I like the band I'm there for but the other bands are left wanting. Not so that night. All three bands were on fire. I'm not a huge Hinder fan but they even did well. Last time I saw them was at Red Rocks for the 3 Doors Down concert and they were not great. I'll post my concert experience later too. Back to work!
